The ignominious exit of former Lok Ayukta justice Shivaraj Patil has made chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda extra cautious in selecting the successor for justice Patil. Gowda has written to leaders of opposition in both the houses of legislature seeking their suggestions for selecting an ideal candidate to head the anti-corruption agency.

Leader of opposition in legislative assembly, Siddaramaiah, and his legislative council counterpart, Motamma, have received the letter, which urges them to suggest a panel of suitable candidates for the post, of which, a final choice would be made in consultation with the chief justice of state high court, speaker of the assembly and chairman of the legislative council.

However, the CM’s initiative has failed to convince the opposition on the state government’s commitment for a consensus on selecting an ideal candidate. The Opposition leaders have decided to demand the chief minister to convene a meeting for a detailed discussion  about the probable candidates and then make a good choice.

Speaking to DNA, Motamma said, “If the chief minister is really committed to ensure a blemish-free ideal candidate, he should have convened a meeting of the collegium that selects the Lokayukta instead of just writing to us to suggest a list of candidates. We will write back to the chief minister demanding him to convene a meeting so that we can present our suggestions and also discuss about the candidates that the chief minister has short-listed.”

Motamma sees the letter as just a cursory formality by the chief minister. “We are of the view that the chief minister is just completing a formality by seeking our views and he will then announce the name that he would have already decided. We want to oppose such a charade. A threadbare discussion should be held before finalising the next Lok Ayukta,” she added. Justices SR Bannaurmath, RV Ravindran and NK Sodhi have emerged the frontrunners for the post.

Justices SR Bannaurmath is a retired chief justice of the Kerala high court who served as a judge in the Karnataka high court. Justice RV Ravindran was the chief justice of Madhya Pradesh high court. Justice Nauvdip Kumar Sodhi is former chief justice of Karnataka high court.
