Sadananda Gowda lays emphasis on empowerment

Youth constitute 41% of the population and the challenge is to channel their energy.

The 17th National Youth Festival featuring the rich cultural heritage of the country kicked off in Mangalore on Thursday. During the inauguration of the five-day event, chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda announced ‘Youth Budget’ and constituted a task-force to monitor the youth empowerment programme.

“It is time to have a youth budget and special task force for monitoring and implementing youth empowerment programmes in Karnataka as my state has become the technology hub and knowledge state of the country because of the youth,” said Gowda.
Calling for the development of youth programmes, Gowda said the group constitutes 41% of the population and the government’s challenge is to channel their energy for the development of the economy along with other sectors like agriculture, industry and knowledge.

The state Knowledge Commission report has made significant observation on empowering youth in various facets of society and place them on higher rings of the national human resources development index.
Infrastructure for youth

To achieve this goal, government has taken steps to create infrastructure for sports and youth affairs in every taluk level. Gowda said: “Carry the spirit of this festival along when you go back to your respective places and resolve to demand your share of empowerment and develop a country of your dreams”.

Union minister for youth affairs and sports Ajay Maken re-iterated that youth be given their due share in the national development scheme. He said the Centre is making plans to have a working collaboration with the state governments in empowering the youth and provide special incentives to young achievers in sports and cultural fields.

Union minister for corporate affairs M Veerappa Moily called on the state governments to speed up their youth empowerment programmes, especially in the economic sector.
