Rebels return, turbulence ahead

Barely 48 hours after the Surpeme Court quashed the suspension of 11 rebel BJP MLAs, the party managed to win their support, but the BSY govt is likely to drift into choppy waters as governor HR Bhardwaj is believed to have recommended president's rule.

It did not take even 48 hours for chief minister BS Yeddyurappa to make 10 of the 11 rebel BJP MLAs fall in line, but his bete noire, governor Hans Raj Bhardwaj, has introduced fresh twists to the ongoing political drama to ensure that happy-ending eludes the beleaguered leader.

The truce mission from ministers MP Renukacharya and Umesh Katti to national capital yielded the desired results after the 11 rebels held discussions with party national leaders Arun Jaitley and Dharmendra Pradhan. “We have realised our past mistakes and have decided to extend unconditional support to BS Yeddyurappa government in the interest of the people of our constituencies and the state. Providing stable government and devoting full time and energy for development of the state is our only objective now,” declared Balachandra Jharkiholi, leader of the rebel group.

Jharkiholi and the other rebels flatly denied any demands from their side for extending the support. However, sources in BJP stated that the chief minister had agreed to induct at least three rebel BJP MLAs into the cabinet and accommodate the others as heads of boards and corporations. Liberal financial allocation for the development of their constituencies too has been assured. Jharkiholi, CK Bellubbi, Anand Asnotikar and Belur Gopalakrishna have emerged front-runners for the cabinet berths.

However, not all the 11 rebels fell for the bait. HS Shankarlinge Gowda rejected the offer and expressed his determination to oppose the leadership of Yeddyurappa. “There is no change in my stand as I had expressed in the letter submitted to the Governor in October 2010.” However he made it clear that he would function as an MLA of the party.

The five independents, PM Narendraswamy, Shivaraj Thangadagi, Gulihatti D  Shekhar, Venkataramanappa and D Sudhakar, are not so lucky yet, as they preferred to remain neutral. The decision was taken after the BJP insisted that they extend their unconditional support to the Yeddyurappa government in writing.

“We refused to sign the letter as it could lead to legal complications. We will take a final decision on this after consulting legal experts,” said Thangadagi.

Later in the day, the 10 rebels submitted a letter to governor HR Bhardwaj conveying their unconditional support to the Yeddyurappa-led BJP government.
