With former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa upping the ante in his quest to get back the chief minister’s post, home and transport minister R Ashoka played the mediator’s role to defuse the crisis by meeting BJP national president Nitin Gadkari and senior national leader Arun Jaitley on Thursday.
Yeddyurappa is likely to be summoned to Delhi for parleys with the national leaders. Speaking to media after his talks with Jaitley, Ashoka said: “I have explained the political situation in Karnataka in the wake of Yeddyurappa’s demand for a suitable post before January 15. I have conveyed to national leaders that we cannot ignore Yeddyurappa as he has toiled hard to build the party and played a major role in bringing the BJP to power in the state.”
Ashoka stated that he does not belong to any faction and he would abide by the decision of the party high command. Ashoka also said he drew the attention of national leaders to moves from the JD(S) and Congress to take advantage of the dissidence within BJP.
Ashoka reportedly discussed the consequences if Yeddyurappa quits the party and floats his own outfit in the state. He made a strong plea for the national leaders to resolve the crisis without further delay.
With the BJP national leadership busy in preparations for assembly elections in five states, an immediate decision is not expected on Yeddyurappa’s demand to reinstate him as CM.
However, it is reported that national leaders expressed their readiness to speak to Yeddyurappa to sort out the issue.
The former chief minister is expected to be summoned to Delhi for talks. He is likely to be requested to show patience till the assembly elections are completed so that the national leaders can later devote their full attention to resolve the crisis.
