The state department of Pre-University Education (PUE) has finally bowed to pre-university college lecturers, who had boycotted the

II PUC evaluation that began on April 6. In a meeting on Saturday at the department director’s office, it was decided that a new committee would be formed to look into the lecturers’ demands.

G Kumar Naik, state primary and secondary education secretary, said: “We have formed a committee and it will submit a report in a month.” The committee is headed by Naik. This time, the lecturers’ only demand is that their salary be on par with degree college lecturers. “We will compare our pay scale with that of other states too,” added Naik.

Chief minister BS Yeddyurappa had formed a committee a few days ago to look into the salary-variation issues among state government employees

The PU department committee would take cognisance of this report too while preparing its own report. “Even after this, if any person tries to influence lecturers to boycott, and those who boycott evaluation work, will face legal action,” said PUE department director Rashmi Mahesh.

Protest without fizz
Compared to previous years, this year, lecturers boycotting evaluation work have not created a furore as the number of teachers participating in the protest is considerably lesser. The state has 30,000 lecturers and at least 80% are eligible for evaluation work. From that number, just about 300 lecturers have taken part in the protests.

According to lecturers, agitating teachers formed a new association a month ago, but only 200 to 300 members are members.

There are three main associations in the state —Karnataka PU Federation, Karnataka State Government PU College Lecturers’ Association and Karnataka Secondary Education Officials and Lecturers’ Association.

A few days ago, the associations teamed up and decided not to boycott the evaluation process. They also promised the government that the evaluation process would not be disturbed.

However, a splinter group, Karnataka State PU College Lecturers’ Association, began to boycott the evaluation work.
