A minor impregnated by her lover was banished from a village after a village court slapped a fine of Rs10,000 on her family.
The incident came to light when media highlighted the plight of the five-month pregnant girl who had been living in the corridors of the government hospital in Kollegal taluk since April.
Initially, the hospital employees took no notice of her as she sat in its corridor begging for food and money from visitors passing by. The authorities acted only when media focused on her plight. They then admitted her into a ward and began treating her.
The victim from Bannisorige village of Yalandur taluk in Chamrajnagar district was working as a labourer and lived with her father and stepmother.

Her family was upset and furious when they came to know that the boy belonged to a different caste.
They took the matter to the village elders who found the girl guilty of offending her family and the village for having an affair with a boy of a different caste.
The village panchayat (village court) banished her from the village after slapping a fine of `10,000 on her family.
Insulted and humiliated, the victim finally landed in the government hospital in Kollegal taluk.
Manballi police authorities said necessary action would be taken against those responsible for her plight if she filed a complaint.
When the matter was brought to the notice of Nina P Nayak, head of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, she said the commission would take steps to protect the interest of the girl.
“I will ask the child welfare committee members to investigate the matter and report to me for further action,” she said.
