The officials of India Post were directed by the II Additional District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum to pay a compensation of Rs15,000 for allegedly misplacing a parcel belonging to one of its customers.

The forum pronounced its order on November 16 that the postal department must pay the compensation to the complainant within 45 days from the date of the order, as well as Rs2, 000 as litigation costs. Non-compliance with the order would lead to an interest of 6% a year.

Manjith Kaur Sodhi, a resident of BTM 1st Stage, had approached the forum after her parcel was misplaced by the postal authority, which then offered her a refund of Rs240, which was double the amount of the parcel charge. She refused to receive the amount offered, as the parcel contained wedding material worth Rs14,727, and filed a complaint with the consumer forum. When the parcel booked on December 2, failed to reach Jalandhar, the destination, she complained to the Jayanagar East post office.

After several attempts at contacting them, she was finally informed that the parcel was misplaced. She filed her complaint seeking the compensation amount, along with the cost of the parcel, Rs14,727, and litigation expenses, against the senior superintendent of post offices (Bangalore south division), the manager (OPS & CS) business development division and Jayanagar East post office.

The forum, after hearing both the parties versions, referred to two previous orders regarding similar issues and directed the department to pay the compensation to the complainant.

The opponents argued that the complainant was entitled only to double the speed post charges and a cheque of Rs240 has been issued to the complainant on May 25, 2010 which she had declined.
