The number of crime incidents taking place in the city has increased in March, statistics reveal. Police officials attribute the increase to heavy deployment of police personnel at various courts in the aftermath of March-2 violence at City Civil Court complex.

While 28 incidents of chain snatching were reported in the city in January and 41 in February, 51 incidents were reported in the first 20 days of March. Also, the number of house-break theft cases during daytime was 26 in January and 23 in February. Twenty-one such cases were reported in the first 20 days of March.
A senior police official said the number of cases of chain snatching and robberies in the first two months of this year was about half of what it was previous year. The officer said the police had taken special initiatives to control chain snatching, robbery and dacoity. However, the officer added that the volume of crime that took place in the last 10 days of March equalled half of what had happened in 60 days in January and February.

The police officer said the main reason behind the increase in the crime rate was heavy deployment of police personnel at different courts in the city after March 2, to control advocates’ proposed protests and rallies. An ACP of east division said even the crime beat police had been deployed to maintain law and order. A police officer from west division said that in his police station, there were no men to even register cases as they, too, had been sent to the field in the wake of advocates’ threats.

While the police have recorded the number of crime incidents that took place in the city this year, they could not produce the statistics regarding solved cases. A police officer said the numbers were yet to be compiled, adding that too few cases were solved.

March saw major crime incidents taking place, such as kidnap and murder of jeweller Nitesh Bera, abduction of a Metro engineer, and murder of two paan stall owners in Bagalur. Apart from this, the number of petty crimes such as chain snatching and robbery has increased in all divisions.

A senior police officer said a way to avoid chain snatching is that each police station should maintain a record of when and where the incident took place, and deploy policemen there during the ‘peak crime hours’. Another officer at the police commissioner’s office said they were successful in controlling robbery committed by miscreants posing as cab drivers. He conceded that the situation had gone out of control now.
