Lalrokhuma Pachau, who recently completed a stint as DGP at his home state Mizoram, is emerging as a strong contender for the post of Karnataka DG and IGP, as the state government seems to have determined to reward him with the post to avoid further embarrassment.

According to sources, cases against former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa could possibly derail if Shankar M Bidari is given the posting again and this could make it difficult for the ruling party to tame Yeddyurappa.

Moreover, Pachau is the senior most among the contenders and has a good record. He is a 1977 batch IPS officer and will retire on July 31, 2015. If he is appointed DGP and IG, he will be in the post for more than three years. The Supreme Court had ordered in 2010 that state DGPs have to have a minimum tenure of two years to prevent political interference in their functioning.
Since RK Dutta, the next strong contender, is planning to join central services and Shushanth Mahapatra, another contender, is less popular, Pachau has an edge, sources said.

However, the government may face some difficulty since Pachau has never worked in executive positions in the state, sources said.

The state government has decided to not to take any risk in the appointment of next DG and IGP after AR Infant and Bidari retire by May 31. It has decided to send names of nine senior IPS officers to Union Public Service Commission to finalise three names for the top post. The state government has the authority to appoint any of the three which will be finalised by the UPSC.
Pachau, who came to the city on Thursday and reported to chief secretary SV Ranganath on Friday, told DNA that he will meet chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda and home minister R Ashoka for completing the procedure of reporting to duty.

Talking to mediapersons, Pachau said that he will serve the state in whatever capacity that the government decides. “I will talk more once I get the posting,” he said.
