It is alleged that associates of BJP corporator B Govindaraju kidnapped the owner of an audio company on Wednesday night, and released him after a senior police officer issued a stern warning.

In his complaint, the proprietor of Lahari Audios, Velu, alleged that a five-man gang intercepted his car in front of Ambedkar Bhavan and kidnapped him around 9.30 pm.

“The gang came in a Toyota Innova car bearing  registration number KA-04-MG-6759. I was going home in my Maruti Zen car, after attending a function at the Ambedkar Bhavan,” Velu said in the complaint.

The gangsters roughed up Velu’s driver Mukund, and pushed him out of the car. They bundled the businessman into their car and sped away. Velu reportedly told the police his kidnappers had beaten him up in the moving car, demanded the money he owed as part of getting the audio rights of Olave Mandara, a Kannada movie produced by corporator Govindaraju.

The businessman claimed that he managed to reach assistant commissioner of police (Pulakeshinagar) BB Ashok Kumar over the phone, and informed him of the incident. He also gave him the car’s registration number.

Officer Kumar spoke to one of the kidnappers, Srinivas, who is also the brother of corporator Govindaraju, representing HBR Layout in the BBMP council.

The conversation happened over Velu’s phone. Kumar ordered Srinivas to release the businessman, and told him that the police had received their car number, and they could not escape arrest.

Srinivas reportedly told the officer that they kidnapped Velu since he had failed to pay the money he owed them. After Kumar contacted the kidnappers, they switched off Velu’s mobile phone, dropped him off near the income tax office at Queen’s Circle, and fled.

The businessman went to the High Grounds police station and lodged a complaint.

Srinivas was earlier trapped by the Lokayukta in the KIADB land scam, along with the special deputy commissioner (Bangalore Urban), Ramanjaneya.

Incidentally, the corporator’s name surfaced in the crime on the very same day that another counsellor, a member of the Congress, N Chandra, was granted bail following arrest in connection with the February 20 assault of a team of officials on inspection, including  chief conservator of forests, UV Singh.
