Drought seems to be  the buzzword in state politics, with ministerial teams reaching out to the people hit by drought and former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa moving from one village to another to personally feel the agony of the suffering populace.

However, chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda on Wednesday said that he saw no political intentions in Yeddyurappa’s sudden decision to tour drought-hit areas. “I welcome anyone who visits drought-affected areas, be it Yeddyurappa, HD Deve Gowda, Siddaramaiah, Parameshwar or  KS Eshwarappa.

I don’t see any politics in providing drought relief,” he said, after offering puja at the Muthyalamma temple in Bangalore as part of the temple’s car festival.

Gowda said that he would he take appropriate action if these leaders find any lapses in providing relief for the drought-affected people during their visit. “I have already constituted three ministerial teams to take up drought relief works on a war footing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Yeddyurappa, who visited parts of drought-affected areas in Bellary district, accused the Union government of discriminating against Karnataka in providing funds for drought relief works. He demanded the Centre to release at least `500 crore for Karnataka.

Rural development and panchayat raj minister Jagadish Shettar, met Union minister for rural development, Jairam Ramesh, in New Delhi and submitted a memorandum seeking liberal aid from the Centre for taking up drought relief works.

Shettar urged Ramesh to approve at least 4,000 km of rural road works for Karnataka to be taken up under the prime minister’s Gram Sadak Yojana.

Shettar has also requested for a grant of `400crore for employment guarantee scheme in drought-hit areas.  Shedding light on the drinking water crisis and fodder problem for cattle, Shettar demanded an immediate grant of `1000 crore from the Centre.

The minister stated that the state had earlier asked the Centre for Rs2600 crore funds, but it has not received any response.
