Lack of lane discipline among Bangalore's motorists is often cited as one of the reasons behind road accidents; in this backdrop, city traffic police will launch a drive to educate motorists about the discipline, after which will come the stage where the offenders will be penalised.

MA Saleem, additional commissioner of police (traffic), said the campaign would start once lanes are marked out on major roads in the city. “Considering that most people are not aware of what exactly lane discipline is, we will first educate them and then start fining them,” he said.

He informed that the traffic police would start the campaign at major crossings such as Trinity Circle, Basava Circle and Mysore Bank Circle, where the problem is acute because of large volume of traffic. He said the traffic police would give special attention to buses and autos, as these are the main culprits when it comes to violation of lane discipline. He said it was common to see buses stopped in the middle of the road, with passengers alighting. He said the auto drivers in particular change lanes freely. He highlighted that when one vehicle swerves and switches lane suddenly, the vehicles behind it are in danger, adding that cutting lanes often causes accidents.

City traffic police have already started educating auto drivers about traffic rules through workshops it conducts every fortnight. Such classes will be held for other motorists too.

Saleem said there were two aspects to the problem of lane discipline: people do not follow it and many people do not know about it in the first place. Most driving schools tell that lane discipline means that slow-moving vehicles have to drive on the left lane of the road. Also, motorists are not allowed to change lane suddenly. However, too few motorists follow these rules. It is a common sight to see that a vehicle waiting on the left lane at a junction speeds towards right turn, posing threat of an accident.

To discourage this, city traffic police will deploy officers to keep an eye on those who violate lane discipline.
