Three days before two heavyweights of Karnataka politics were to face-off for the much publicised ‘Truth Test’ before Lord Manjunatha in the main temple in Dharmasthala, chief minister BS Yeddyurappa has backed out of the challenge with former chief minister and JD(S) state president, HD Kumaraswamy, following the advice of his own party national president, Nitin Gadkari. Gadkari, in Bangalore on Friday, advised Yeddyurappa against mixing religion and politics.

“I advised Yeddyurappa that it was not appropriate to use religious places, especially temples, for politics. We will fight political issues politically, and legally,” Gadkari said.

The week-long debate over Yeddyurappa and Kumaraswamy settling their political scores before Lord Manjunatha was brought to an end officially with BJP state president, KS Eshwarappa, formally announcing: “The truth test is now a closed chapter.”

Yeddyurappa, however, will go ahead with his visit to Dharmasthala with his family members. But Kumaraswamy is going in for the kill. He has planned a political yatra to Dharmasthala as part of his plan to make the intended truth test a big event. The yatra will be launched from Ramanagara on June 26, beginning with a puja at Chamundeshwari temple before addressing a public meeting in Ramanagara town. It will then head to Dharmasthala via Magadi, Kunigal, Belur Cross, Chennarayapatna and Hassan to reach Dharmasthala late on Sunday night.

Kumaraswamy is expected to reach Manjunatha Temple on Monday morning, where he might take the truth test by himself. Now, both Yeddyurappa and Kumaraswamy will be in Dharmasthala on June 27, but with the former only offering puja at 10am before visiting Kukke Subramanya in the afternoon. A large contingent of police personnel will be deployed in Dharmasthala on Monday in view of Yeddyurappa’s and Kumaraswamy’s presence there, besides it being Ekadashi.
