For skirt clad girls, it is an embarrassment climbing the foot over-bridge at Basaveshwara Circle near Sophia School. The gap between the steps remains open in full view of pedestrians passing beneath the infrastructure. During rains when the steps of the bridge turn slippery, it poses a safety threat too, especially for children and elders.

On Monday, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council will discuss a proposal to close the gaps between the steel steps of the skywalk and the connecting platform and install MS gauge steps and platforms on both sides, additional steps near Gulf Club gate, roof to protect the bridge users from sun and rain and escalators for the comfort of the users.

“This is being proposed to improve the utility of the skywalk,” said a BBMP official adding that engineer Lokesh will be assigned for quality check.

The subject will be placed in the council for approval on Monday.

The BBMP is also planning to set up skywalks at Indian Air Force ASC centre, Gangenahalli, Bellary Road, Mount Carmel College, Palace Road, Hosur Road opposite Forum Mall, Tavarekere main road, Pallavi Theatre on Rajaram Mohan Roy Road, near Maharani College on Palace Road and Byatarayanapura BBMP office on Bellary Road.

Before assigning the work at Sophia School skywalk, the BBMP will put forward some conditions before the contractor. The installation work should be completed in four months for the use of public. After 10 years, the company should pay the BBMP 10% more for the advertisements put up on the infrastructure. After installing escalators and laying the roof, the contracting company must get stability certificate every year from the chief engineer.

Earlier, the BBMP had decided to take up skywalk in 13 places in the city. But seven of the proposals were rejected citing that the construction will mar the beauty of the places.
