They were all drug addicts who bumped into each other at a gym. They had their own bad habits, but little money to indulge in them.

This dire need of money drove them to crime—the plan was to abduct a rich goldsmith.

The mastermind was a failed advocate, Rakesh Raj G. His father, too, was a lawyer. Till his arrest, Rakesh practised at the additional chief metropolitan magistrate’s court.

Rakesh also owned a cyber cafe at Cubbonpet, where he befriended the three youth—Yogesh, Michael John and Giri—all of who were regular customers at the cafe. They all went to the same gym as well. It was at the gym that they met the fifth member-to-be of the gang—Shashikanth, a worker at a goldsmith’s shop.

Yogesh had failed in second year PUC. His father had abandoned the family during Yogesh’s childhood; the grandfather looked after them. Micheal John, the son of a security guard, was a final year BCom student at a private college in Marathalli.  Girish is an SSLC dropout. All the three depended on their respective families.

With his business on the downswing, Rakesh, too, needed more cash. He hatched the plot, and the three youngsters did not have an inkling that they would soon be entering the world of crime. According to deputy commissioner of police (crime) DM Krishnam Raju, they could now do little about their decision since they wanted to lead a comfortable life.

Rakesh promised Giri and Yogesh that he would buy them an autorickshaw with the money extracted from the abduction of a goldsmith. The plans slowly fell in place.

It was not difficult for Rakesh to collect the details about their intended target, Nitesh. For one, Giri and Yogesh stayed near Nitesh’s shop. And when Shashikanth joined the group, they were able to obtain a considerable amount of details about the goldsmith. Shashikanth told the gang members about the routes that Nitesh used, besides ferreting out details about Nitesh’s business transactions. This was crucial since they were now aware of the amount of gold that Nitesh was procuring every day.

Their plan in place, the gang members bought a Honda City car from a private dealer for `1.5 lakh. They promised to pay the balance later.

They next contacted two dacoits known to Rakesh. One of the two is in jail, the other out on bail. The police have not disclosed their names since one of them is at large.

According to the police, when the gang demanded more money and gold jewellery, Nitesh told them that he had invested most of his money in a building still under construction. He even pleaded for a window of two more days so that he could arrange for more money.

The gang, instead, decided to bump off Nitesh since he knew Rakesh, Yogesh and Giri. They did not want to take the chance of being identified. In the end, even this plan did not work out for the gang.
