‘Politics’ has become such a bad word in the state that those who wish to stage a rally to end corruption would like to be perceived as ‘apolitical’.

On Friday, a rally with participation from freedom fighters, intellectuals and workers of the Janata Dal (Secular), began at Freedom Park. The anti-corruption rally would culminate in Shimoga on May 9.

JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda was present too, but could not take the stage as special care was taken to preserve the ‘apolitical’ nature of the rally. However, JD(S) spokesperson and convenor of the Jayaprakash Narayan Forum (the umbrella group for anti-corruption groups in the state), YSV Datta, got on to the stage and urged that all members of the public, transcending affiliation to political parties, join the movement.

The rally against the BJP government is billed as a ‘public movement against corruption in the state’. Freedom fighter HS Doreswamy, 91, led the rally. M Venkataswamy of the Samata Sainik Dal, Siddanagowda Patil of CPI and author Mukundaraj were among the prominent persons present.

In Bangalore, even though JD(S) sought to underplay its presence in the rally, the majority of those taking part were workers of the party. Although those participating appeared to represent different sections of society as the march began from Freedom Park, by the time the rally reached Yeshwantpur, it was evident that the major group comprised JD(S) party workers.

By evening, the rallyists reached Tumkur from where they will proceed to Shimoga.

Anti-corruption rallies taken out by JD(S) from the various district headquarters would culminate in Shimoga on May 9. State JD(S) president and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy headed a rally  from Basavakalyana in Bidar district.

Deve Gowda, who rode an open jeep with the rallyists after a brief march, said, “Despite repeated pointers from governor HR Bhardwaj, the Yeddyurappa government has paid little heed.” He said that his son Kumaraswamy had produced 'documentary evidence' to show that the Centre too had failed to act against corruption in the state.
