Entering the world of chocolates, on the auspicious and perfect occasion of Ugadi, the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) launched five varieties of chocolates on Friday at its headquarters. Children from SOS village (home for special kids) were invited and actor Ragini Dwivedi distributed chocolates among them.

“Though other states may be facing milk shortage, we are well off. There has been no loss. In fact, we have had a substantial profit,” said AS Premanath, managing director, KMF.

The profits of KMF have almost doubled this year, going up to ¤30 crore as compared to previous year’s Rs16 crore. “In co-operative dairying, KMF currently stands second only to Gujarat’s Amul. Our aim is to be the No 1,” said G Somashekara Reddy, chairman, KMF. The company’s annual turnover increased from Rs3,350 crore recorded the previous year to almost Rs4,500 crore this year.

Three months ago, KMF tied up with the Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Co-operative Ltd (Campco), for manufacturing chocolates.

“There should be cooperation between co-operatives. Currently our production is 17,000 tonnes of chocolates, which we want to increase to 23,000 in five years,” said Konkodi Padmanabha, president of Campco. The company said it had two lines of production exclusively meant for Nandini, for which they have made an investment of Rs1.50 crore.

“The milk chocolates are healthy and nutritious and they are not excessively sweet. Even though I don’t have much of a sweet tooth I like these chocolates, because they are not too sweet,” said Sandalwood actor Dwivedi.

Shortly, KMF is introducing Nandini glucose biscuits, also to be manufactured under co-packaging arrangements.
