The fortnight-long impasse between Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL)-Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) and project-displaced families (PDFs) ended on Monday with the firms offering a ‘phased job package’ to over 1,080 individuals belonging to PDFs.

Brokered jointly by the district in-charge minister Krishna Palemar, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and deputy speaker of the state assembly N Yogish Bhat, the families  agreed to lift the blockade at MRPL gate and restore normalcy.

PDFs were seeking jobs in various components of MSEZ, MRPL, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Mangalore Petrochemicals (OMPL), Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL). They had been squatting in front of MRPL gate, blocking the entry of labour and machinery for the upcoming third stage expansion of the petrochemicals complex for the past 15 days.

MRPL suffered a loss of Rs80 crore due to the slow progress of work. Te skilled labour force was also gradually thinning due to wage loss. According to the deal  between the participating companies and PDFs, the onus of employing individuals will  be shared among the four firms — MRPL, OMPL, ISPRL and MSEZ — on the same ratio as the land acquired by them.

PDF spokesperson Bhujanga Shetty said  MRPL will give jobs to 180 persons, OMPL to 300, ISPRL to 89 and the rest will be employed by MSEZ which has got the largest chunk of land (2400 acre). MRPL has already employed 86 persons, while others are yet to start recruiting.

The companies have agreed to give a stipend of `10,000 to each individual and take work from them in any form as the company desires. Once the plants come up, they will get their service conditions on a higher salary. MRPL will employ 91 persons in the next three months. OMPL will meet its commitment in 18 to 36 months, while MSEZ in three years.
