The BBMP, in association with ITC and Ramky Environment Engineers, has begun a dry-waste collection centre in Shivajinagar; it was inaugurated on Monday.

The BBMP’s standing committee for health signed an MoU with two firms to collect garbage from Bharathinagar and Sampangiram Nagar as a pilot project where dry waste will be recycled instead of dumping them in landfills.

The BBMP has also decided it will launch such centres in 29 wards and extend the service to all the 198 BBMP wards. Standing committee chairman KN Geetha Shashikumar said the city generates 4,800 tonnes of garbage every day.

They are disposed of in landfills and they in turn lead to health hazards and environment problems. At the local level, 30% of garbage is dry waste, and if recycled, precious natural resources can be saved.

She said the BBMP will also set up 16 bio-methanation plants, which will produce 850 kV to power streetlights in Seegehalli, Magadi Road, and Bommanahalli. The BBMP has also decides to convert waste into energy in Mandur, where plastic will be converted to crude oil; 20 MW can be generated using 10 tonnes of plastic.

ITC (material) chief manager S Murugesan said those who provide dry waste will be given between `2 and `8 per kg. “If people segregate dry waste instead of mixing it with other waste, we will pay them. We will distribute garbage segregation bags to collect dry waste and it would be collected once in a week”, he said.

The company imports 450 tonnes of recyclable paper every day from the US by spending Rs150 crore per year. “As we recycle paper to prepare cardboards, we intend to stop imports and start collecting dry waste from the local centre and send it to factories,” he added.
