Bangalore’s little ones are moving and shaking to a new way of learning — Kinderdance. The concept, which is very popular in the west, blends dance, gymnastics, fitness and academic skills for children of ages 2 to 12. What makes it unique is that it incorporates educational concepts in its special method for the child’s total development.

Kinderdance has been initiated in three Bangalore schools by Keerthana Ramarapu, a software professional-turned-dancer.

“Kinderdance’s unique blend helps children learn leadership qualities and pick up self-confidence,” said Keerthana.

“Kinderdance programmes blend educational concepts with various forms of movement, dance and gymnastics. The programmes help develop gross motor skills, movement creativity, fitness, and body awareness. Each class is taught using lesson plans which incorporate original and traditional age-appropriate music and songs,” said Keerthana, who is also a trained Bharatnatyam dancer.

Latha Madhu, founder of Prakriti Pre School, Indiranagar, said the concept helped thirty children in her school to build leadership qualities, self-confidence and self-esteem.

“After few months of training, my students have already started showing leadership qualities and self-confidence. They have also achieved good body posture, developed social interaction skills, and improved in their athletic and academic pursuits,” said Latha. Neev Pre-school in Whitefield is also using the method for its children.

“It helps to fight against child obesity, which has become a worldwide epidemic. Kinderdance programmes serves as a catalyst to enhance the creative side of the young mind and body,” said Asha Mathews, founder of ABC Pre-School in Chennai, which has recently adopted Kinderdance in its curriculum.

Many Bangalore schools have shown interest in the concept. The classes lasts between 30 to 45 minutes. “Lot of schools in Bangalore are interested to take up the programme. We are in talks with several well-known schools of Bangalore and in coming months we’ll have more children under our fold,” said Keerthana.
