The body of a traffic police head constable, who had been missing since May 6 from his Srirampuram residence, was found in a grove near Bangarpet in Kolar district.

The body of P Vijay Kumar, 53, has been apparently burnt to avoid identification. Police identified the man based on a few personal belongings found at the crime scene.

Two persons, including a woman, have been arrested. Though sources in the police identified the woman as Rajajinagar-resident Padmavathi, they refused the name the other, fearing it might affect further probe.

The deceased Kumar and Padmavathi were known to each other, police said.

Financial dispute has been suspected to be the murder motive. Investigations revealed that Kumar had loaned some money to Padmavathi, who had been running a travel agency in the city. The man had also handed over some silver and gold ornaments to the accused. They fell apart after the policeman started demanding the return of money and ornaments.

Rajajinagar police took up the investigation after a complaint was filed by Kumar’s son, V Sridhar, an engineering student. He complained that his father had gone missing since 5.30 pm on May 6.

DNA reported the case on May 12, after Kumar’s colleagues at Malleswaram traffic police station accused the Rajajinagar police of ignoring the complaint.

Padmavathi became a person of interest to investigators after they had checked the cell phone records of the policeman. They found that Kumar and the woman frequently communicated with each other. The travel agent was summoned to the police station along with others whose phone numbers were also found in the records.

“We came to know that Kumar had been asking her to return his money. She kept on delaying the repayment,” a police officer said.
During further interrogation, the woman reportedly confessed to the crime. Police said she confessed that Kumar was killed with the help of others. His body was then set on fire at Bangarpet.
It was not known if Kumar was killed in the city, and his body taken to Bangarpet.

Police said they took the woman to Bangarpet on Sunday, and found the body. Kumar’s office desk key and his two-wheeler key were found at the scene.

A team, including deputy commissioner of police (North) HS Revanna, assistant commissioner of police (Malleswaram sub-division) GT Ajjappa and Rajajinagar inspector AG Kariyappa solved the case. Police sources hinted that more persons could be arrested in the coming days.
