Unidentified miscreants threw stones at the Wakf Board chairman Abdul Riyaz Khan while he was approaching the board’s headquarters on Cunningham Road to attend a meeting on Saturday. Khan suffered minor injuries.

Board member Ubedullah Sharif, who was accompanying Khan, was also injured. Police said the miscreants also damaged the board’s office and Khan’s car.

Later, Khan went to the High Ground police station and filed a complaint about the incident. Police have formed two teams to catch the attackers.

“As Khan approached the office on Cunningham Road around 10.30 am, some unidentified persons threw stones at the rear glass of his Skoda car, which was damaged,” a police officer said.

“Later, many people gathered there. They asked him not to attend the meeting and demanded that he resign from the chairmanship of the Wakf Board. A case has been registered and we’re investigating into the incident. It isn’t clear who’s involved in the attack.”

Police said groupism within the Wakf Board seemed to be taking a violent turn. Apparently, the groupism has worsened after a recent report by Anwar Manippady, chairman of the Karnataka State Minorities Commission, accused several politicians of encroaching on and seizing Wakf property in many places in the state.
