An assistant manager with a infrastructure firm, who met with an accident on Wednesday while working at metro's Nayandahalli site, succumbed to injuries on Sunday.

Officials of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited blamed it on his employer Simplex Infrastructure adding strict action would be taken against the company.

The accident happened on Wednesday at 11.10 am. Pijus Kanti Sil, 42, an assistant manager in the electrical department, was working at pier number 435 in Nayandahalli on Mysore Road.

While trying to repair a concrete pumping machine, Pijus inserted his right hand into the device when, suddenly, a heavy metal disc, which closes the gates of the pump, fell crushing it.

His co-workers immediately took him to the Manipal Speciality Hospital in Rajarajeshwarinagar.
“Orthopaedic and plastic surgeons operated on him on the same day. But falling blood pressure and multiple organ failure made his case critical. He had to be shifted to the intensive care unit of our hospital on Old Airport Road on Friday,” said Sudarshan Ballal, medical director, Manipal Hospital.

The accident victim’s condition worsened on Sunday when he fell into a coma. He died at 10 am.

For the past two years, Pijus was working on Reach 2. His family was staying with him.
Byataranapura police have filed a case.

A metro spokesman said that action would be taken against Simplex jointly by general consultants and the metro corporation once the post-mortem examination report proves their negligence.

When asked whether that action would mean termination of Simplex’s contract, the spokesman said he could not tell that adding compensation should be paid by his employer and not by metro.

This is not the first time that Simplex Infrastructure is in news for such accidents. On November 30, 2010, a Namma Metro barricade fell on two bikers on West of Chord Road.

On March 18 the same year, barricades fell on three motorists in Chandra Layout but all escaped with minor injuries.

BMRCL has seen many such accidents on CMH Road and Tumkur Road during construction work due to the negligence of the contractor.
