While MG Road metro station will be a much sought after destination in the entire Reach 1 of the Namma Metro, works have to be completed on time for the safety of passengers alighting there.

They may have to use the roadside entry and exit points under the elevated tracks as entry and exit points through the foot over-bridge to the Old Plaza theatre side have not been completed yet.

Since the construction of a grand new boulevard is under way on the sides of Cariappa Park, mounds of earth lay heaped near its wall. Once monsoon arrives, the place will turn slushy and slippery.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has always been blamed for bulldozing the beauty of the once known South Parade of Bangalore. But the corporation and the state government have promised to make this stretch a paradise in the heart of the city.

Although the work was supposed to begin in July 2010, no contractor came forward to take up the project. BMRCL, however, wanted it done through Karnataka Land Army Corporation or Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation. N Sivasailam, who is the present managing director of BMRCL, was the former MD of Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation.

The MG Road station is almost ready and the construction of a footpath and entry and exit points are being given final touches. But work at the entry and exit points through the foot over-bridge to the Old Plaza theatre side is still not over and people may have to use the roadside entry and exit points under the elevated tracks.

In the meantime, the part of the acquired land for constructing museums and art galleries from Anil Kumble Circle to Manekshaw Parade ground has been dug up and mounds of earth lay heaped near the wall of the Carippa Park and the parade ground.

The mock-up coach has not been shifted yet from the Anil Kumble Circle. The decision to shift it to a depot or auction it will be made soon, said sources at the site.

Hence, the overall situation near MD Road station is not safe enough for the huge crowd the metro is expected to draw in the initial stages after its launch.

The cultural hotspot is likely to have a museum, an art gallery, food courts, toilets and restrooms. A 152-seater walkway on the ground level and an elevated skywalk ramp will be made. Trees like Jacaranda, Gulmohar and pink Tabebuia flowers will be planted on either side of the elevated walkway.

The budget for the project was estimated at Rs5 crores, but sources in the BMRCL said it could escalate to Rs7 crore considering the rising cost of construction material.

Meanwhile, the footpath reconstruction near Trinity and CMH Road stations is half way through. The foot over-bridge across Old Madras Road to the Swami Vivekananda station is also getting ready.
