After four years of 'suffering', the traders and businessmen of MG Road were looking forward to happy days when Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) announced the Ugadi launch of Namma Metro.

The Bangalore Trade Association was all set to welcome the change with a 10-day celebration. However, with Namma Metro playing hide and seek, the association chose not hide its disappointment and go ahead with MG Road Bazaar that was inaugurated on Saturday.

"We took permission from the police department, the Palike and also got a no-objection-certificate from BMRCL," said association president Bhoopalam P Srinath. There could be a 300% increase in sales once the Metro opens up. Commissioner of police Shankar Bidari who inaugurated the bazaar assured that Metro would be on track by April end.

N Vasanta Kumar, treasurer of the association and partner of Vijayalakshmi Silks, said they were offering `1,000 discount on a purchase of every `10,000 till April 11. "If the Metro had opened, the experience would have been great," he said.

The stretch from Kumble Circle to Cauvery Emporium would be decorated with lights, arches, etc. "For four years, we were not allowed to put up these things. Now, we want to send a message to shoppers that MG Road is open and happening. The traffic police had made arrangements for parking near the Metro station. More personnel would be sent if the crowd interferes with the traffic flow," Srinath said.

Although the wait has not ended, the traders are rejoicing, hoping their worst days have now almost come to an end.
