A Kuala Lumpur-bound Malaysia Airlines flight with 151 people on board was forced to return 90 minutes after it took off from Bangalore International Airport (BIA) on Sunday following a technical problem, leaving its passengers stranded at the airport.

The MH-193D flight landed back safely one-and-a-half hours after it took-off at 1.18 am. Passengers said the pilot and air crew had informed them about the inability to land at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as they were about to reach the Malaysian airspace and kept hovering around for a few minutes.

The pilot and crew kept changing their versions on the inability to land at the KLIA, they added.

“First they said that there is fog at the KLIA and that the aircraft cannot land. Then they said that the aircraft was hit by a technical sang and finally they put the blame on the radar navigation system,” said Ramanath Ksheeraddhi, who was on a business trip to the Malaysian capital.

He added that upon arrival at the BIA at 4.30 am, the Malaysia Airlines staff did not attend to them and the passengers were left stranded.

“There was no correspondence from the airlines staff. The airline airport manager Sandeep Daniel met us only at 8 am. It was only after much persuading they agreed to accommodate us in a hotel in Majestic,” he added.

Daniel said that being the only officer of the airline at BIA, he had to take care of other flights and passengers. He refuted the passengers’ version.

Some passengers said the pilot had not taken adequate rest before the flight and that authorities at the KLIA did not give him permission to touch down.

Malaysia Airlines, in a statement, said the flight could not land at KLIA due to technical reasons and landing restrictions.

“On detecting the technical fault, the captain of the aircraft ensured all safety precautions were observed while bringing the aircraft back to Bangalore and all our passengers were provided all necessary assistance to minimise the discomfort during this duration,” Malaysia Airlines general manager, Karnataka, Hamzah Ayob, said.

The passengers were finally accommodated on another flight at about 7 pm.
