The advocate of H Maheshappa, vice-chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, has informed the court that the V-C had secured a second-class in his BE degree in the year 1983.
Maheshappa’s appointment as V-C has been challenged. Maheshappa took over as V-C on July 1, 2010. Soon after, Anil Kumar and others challenged his appointment, alleging that although Maheshappa had obtained second-class marks in his exams from BDT College of Engineering, Davangere, he had mentioned in his resume that he had secured degree with first-class marks.
The petitioners had sought an inquiry into the matter. The V-C’s advocate said Maheshappa had indeed, originally, obtained second-class marks and not first-class. The division bench headed by Chief Justice Vikramjit Sen adjourned the case to Monday, January 9.
