Veteran Kannada film-star Leelavathi and her actor-son Vinod Raj on Saturday escaped an alleged attempt on their life.

The duo was travelling in a Toyota multi-utility vehicle (MUV) near Shantala Circle in Majestic when the attempt took place at around 9.40 am.

Though initial reports said they were fired at, it later turned out that the projectile hurled at them could be a stone or a metal object. The attack shattered the windowpanes on the car’s left side.

Leelavathi and Vinod Raj, who were sitting with their pet dogs Blacky and Whitey on the backseat, and manager Nagaraj who was sitting in the front escaped unhurt.
Driver Basavaraj too remained unscathed.

The mother-son duo immediately rushed to the nearby Upparpet police station and filed a complaint.  The duo panicked as this was for the second time that their vehicle was being attacked in three years.

In 2006, the four-wheeler involved in Saturday’s attack, was stoned when it was parked before Vinod Raj’s office near Motimahal Hotel in Gandhinagar. In 1996, one unidentified person was caught with a gun in their farmhouse near Soladevanahalli, Nelamangala.

After the 1996 incident, Vinod Raj obtained a gun licence and he was armed when Saturday’s attack took place. Leelavathi and Vinod Raj were on their way to Abbai Naidu Studio in Uttarahalli from their Gandhinagar office.

Vinod Raj  had to participate in Zee TV’s Rock and Roll dance contest as a judge. The show was being shot in Abbai Naidu studio.

Leelavathi was on her way to dub for their home-production film, Yaradu, at Karisubbu Studio, also located in the Abbai Naidu Studio premises.

Leelavathi later said she heard a big thud and something hit their car when it was moving near Shantala Circle. “The window panes were shattered. Fortunately, the shards did not hit my son or others in the car,” the actress said.

Driver Basavaraj said the attack happened when he began moving the car after the signal turned green at the circle. “The window glass broke. Fortunately nothing happened to amma and anna who were sitting near the broken window.”
Police commissioner Shankar Bidari inspected the car and spoke to taken Leelavathi and Vinodraj at the Upparpet police station.

Bidari later told the media that there had been no firing. “A stone or a metal object appears to have been thrown on the four-wheeler. There was no bullet or any lead object found in the car. Nobody has been hurt. A stone found near the car and the broken glass pieces have been sent to the forensic science laboratory. The report is awaited,” he said.

The police have booked a case of attempt to murder and under Arms Act.
