Former IT&BT minister Katta Subramanya Naidu and his corporator son Katta Jagadish may have been remanded to judicial custody by a special Lok Ayukta court on Monday and sent to Parappana Agrahara Central Jail later in the evening.

But the senior Katta, once a powerful minister in the erstwhile BS Yeddyurappa government, and his son, are no ordinary prisoners.

Sources said that Naidu and his son were allowed to use mobile phones. About 20 family members and followers were present inside the premises till late at night.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Katta might be moved to Victoria Hospital later in the night.

Naidu and Jagadish are accused in the multi-crore Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board scam, and accused of accepting a bribe of `87 crore for allotting Ithasca Software 325 acres near Bangalore.

Naidu and Katta Jagadish enjoyed homemade food in prison. Family members sought permission to bring them food from home, and were granted the request.

Food from home reached the new inmates of the prison at 7.30 pm. Pillows, bed covers and other items were also brought, a police officer said. The cell, however, does not have a fan or cot.

"No alcohol, cigarettes or drugs of any kind will be allowed. We have checked all items brought from the house," said jail chief superintendent TH Lakshminarayana.

Katta and his son arrived at the jail around 5 pm. The duo was first taken to the VIP high-security wing in the jail.

There, details were documented about the prison's new inmates, and their thumb impressions were recorded. The two were put through medical tests by the jail's chief medical officer.

A police officer said that following the medical check-up, Subramanya Naidu and Katta Jagadish were considered as 'C' class prisoners, as the court had not given them permission to be 'A' class.

(This is a system of classification followed in some states of the country, where prisoners are ranked according to income and social status.)

Around 6.30 pm, the two were taken to the newly-constructed D Block of the prison and made to stay in a single cell.

A similar status has been given to Ithasca software managing director SV Srinivas, whose bail application was also rejected.

Two police officers are deputed in the night for the security of Subramanya Naidu. The superintendent of police (prisons) has been instructed to visit him regularly.

Lakshminarayana said cell numbers and prisoner numbers could not be allotted on Monday; these would be given on Tuesday.
