“Karnataka high court’s loss is Kerala high court’s gain,” said acting Chief Justice Vikramjit Sen while bidding farewell to Justice Manjula Chellur on Friday.

He was speaking at a function organised by the Bangalore Advocates Association on Chellur’s last working day at the court. Chellur will be taking charge as acting chief justice of the Kerala high court next week.

Justice Sen said a judge should have the passion to correct the wrong.

“You can have wealth in every aspect. But unless you feel the sentiment of what is wrong, you cannot sit on the exotic chair,” he said adding that there was no appropriate person than Manjula Chellur for the Karnataka Legal Services Authority (KSLA).

Justice Chellur’s heart and efforts had gone out for women, children and transgenders. “The high court is losing a valuable asset. Our loss is Kerala high court’s gain,” said the judge.
Chellur advised woman advocates to retain their womanly virtues while fighting for equal rights with men.

She said it was difficult for her to manage family and work. But it was possible, thanks to the support she received from advocates and friends. She said she never had any hiccups while working in the Karnataka high court.

Chellur was appointed as additional judge of the Karnataka HC in 2000. She was appointed as the permanent judge on August 17, 2000.
