If all goes according to plan, Karnataka will have a better rail infrastructure, and the proposal made by the state government will be implemented in the upcoming railway budget, said KH Muniyappa, Union minister of state for railways.

He said that the state government has penned a letter to the Centre, putting forth few demands.

Inaugurating a train service on Tuesday, chief minister BS Yeddyurappa said that the state government is optimistic about the upcoming budget for train connectivity.

Like the Bangalore-Shimoga and Shimoga-Mysore trains, more trains should be introduced connecting the rural and semi-urban areas. Further, the state is ready to undertake projects on cost sharing, where the state will bear 50% of the cost and also provide lands, he said.

Muniyappa added that the work on the proposed Kudachi- Bagalkot, on public-private partnership, is yet to commence. The project was proposed in 2009-10 at a cost of Rs 914 crore for laying 150 km.

So far, the state government has allotted an area of 60 km. He added that the proposed trains— Yeshwanthpur-Delhi Duronto, Howrah-Prashanthi Nilayam and Bangalore-Nelamanagala— will soon start functioning. He also said that plans are on to introduce a dedicated North-South freight corridor to reduce the cost and transportation time.

To make a world-class station in Bangalore, a proposal has already been sent to the railway board, he said. Bangalore’s divisional railway manager, S Mani, said that the station will be improved with a budget of Rs2-3 crore by March 31 next year.

A proposal is with the railway board for land acquisition of Binny Mills site for expanding the station. Conceptual reports are being prepared to make Byapanahalli a world-class station.
