Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda on Saturday said he would be seeking an aid of Rs2,200 crore from the Centre to combat widespread drought in the state.

It has badly affected 136 taluks and caused extensive damage to crops and livestock, causing distress to farmers, he added.
The chief minister was in Mysore to attend the 92nd annual convocation of the Mysore University and to review the Mysore district development plan. He said he would lead an all-party delegation to press Union government for drought relief fund.
“I shall take a tour of the affected areas soon and take up a detailed survey of the drought in the state. Meanwhile, the central government has already released `169 crore and the state has released `364 crore for tackling the initial effect of the drought. But the total fund sought for tackling the drought was Rs2,200 crore, which I shall demand from the central government,” he said.

“Even as I am speaking now, my ministers, especially those in charge of the drought-hit districts, are travelling and collecting data first-hand about the damage and will furnish it to me on April 9. There are three teams of ministers touring these districts, along with top officials,” he said.

Cauvery row
The state government was also concerned about the dispute over the Cauvery water with Tamil Nadu government, which needs to be sorted out over the table, Gowda said. He expressed concern over Tamil Nadu government’s efforts to construct a dam at Hogenakkal and said he would approach central government in this regard.

Japan trip
Referring to his proposed trip to Japan, Gowda said, “I am not going there to have fun, but to impress the investors to attend the Global Investors’ meet to be held in Bangalore later this year. I know the state is reeling under drought, for which efforts on war footing are already on.”

H1N1 cases

The director of medical services has gathered that 435 suspected cases of H1N1 were reported all over the State, out of which 71 have tested positive and three have died, the chief minister said. All district hospitals will take steps to stock medicines and other requirements to counter the H1N1 threat. Private hospitals, where nodal centres were already working, should take steps to screen people regularly, he added.
