The Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) says the coastal region could be the next engine of growth for the state.

FKCCI president JR Bangera said the state government should consider the coastal areas for the next phase of growth, particularly in trade, industry, commerce and tourism.

“For the region to become the next engine of growth, the state should take up infrastructure development urgently. The coast has everything—airport and sea port at Mangalore, railway connectivity, an intricate network of national and state highways, water resources and well-educated, highly skilled and resourceful workforce,” Bangera said.

But the connectivity between Bangalore–Mangalore–Mysore is bad, particularly on the Sampaje–Maani and Shirady BC Road sector on Mangalore–Mysore and Bangalore–Mangalore sectors respectively.

The chief minister had agreed to urgently take up the infrastructure upgradation process as well as creating new facilities, Bangera said.

Talks are on with a French company to create a world-class warehousing facility at Buntwal, like the one in Panvel in Maharashtra. The Panvel facility is helping Mumbai port in the speedy clearance of containerised export material.

The facility planned in Buntwal will give an edge to the New Mangalore Port in handling exports from the hinterland, which includes Bangalore and Mysore.

“Coffee exports from the coffee belt of Karnataka are being gradually diverted to the New Mangalore port from Chikmagalur, Kodagu and Hassan. This belt has more than 80,000 tons of export potential, but owing to bad roads, most of it is being sent via Tuticorin and Chennai ports. When the Sampaje –Maani state highway is converted into a four-lane facility, all that will be diverted to Mangalore,” Bangera pointed out.
