Health minister Sriramulu on Tuesday made an announcement that the state government would soon address the issue of shortage of doctors, especially specialists, at government hospitals in rural areas. He said that 600 specialist doctors would be recruited to government hospitals in a month-and-a-half.

The state needed at least 850 specialists with post-graduate qualification in various faculties, to serve in government hospitals. The high salaries demanded by specialists proved a big hurdle in recruitment.

"The cadre and recruitment rules have now been amended, and a higher salary would be paid. The recruitment process has been initiated, through the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC). The process will be completed in a month-and-a-half," Sriramulu said.

Filling vacant posts of doctors, with the MBBS degree, in state government hospitals, is almost complete. About 2,000 doctors have been recently recruited by the state government. Deputy commissioners of all districts have been authorised to recruit another 250 doctors on contract basis, to fill vacant posts.

Sriramulu chaired a meeting of district health officers and district surgeons, and instructed them to take effective measures for the prevention of monsoon-related epidemics like malaria, dengue, chikungunya and H1N1.

Tackling the mosquito menace would get top priority, and adequate medicines for the epidemics would be stocked, the health minister said, adding that the special focus of the state government would be on Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Gulbarga districts, where a large number of people were taken ill last year.
