The continued debacle of Congress in state by-polls has drawn the ire of party high command. The entire party leadership in the state headed to a luxury resort on Sunday to chalk out revival plans.

In a rare show of unity, the Congress leaders spent an entire day together at Eagleton resort on the outskirts of Bangalore deliberating on exploiting the failings of BJP government for Congress’ benefit.

Chaired by KPCC president G Parameshwar, the meeting was attended by Union ministers from the state SM Krishna, Mallikarjun Kharge, Veerappa Moily, KH Muniyappa, leader of the opposition in the legislative assembly Siddaramaiah, his council counterpart Motamma, among others.

Factionalism within the Congress is being seen as one of the prime reasons for the party faring badly in the bypolls so far. The defeat in the recent bypoll to Koppal assembly constituency when BJP’s image had hit the bottom with its top leaders tainted in corruption cases had rankled party supremo Sonia Gandhi who took the state leadership to task.

The meeting on Sunday was arranged in accordance with the directive from the party high command to end the bickering within and forge a united action plan to revive the party to regain the reigns of power in the next assembly polls.

“We are preparing for general elections, which may happen anytime considering the fact that more BJP leaders are in the line to go to jail. There are too many groups in the BJP which are working against each other. People are fed up the administration which has collapsed. Though we have fared poorly in the bypolls, it is a common phenomenon as people tend to vote for the ruling party in bypolls. We are confident that the Congress will be voted back to power in the next general election whenever it is held,” said G Parameshwar after the meeting.

The meeting discussed jailing of former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, corruption cases against other BJP ministers, factionalism within BJP which could bring down the government and how these developments have hit development works. “We deliberated on strategies to exploit all these factors for the benefit of Congress in the next polls,” Parameshwar said.

He also admitted that Congress paid a heavy price in the past for factionalism within the party and the meeting on Sunday stressed the point.

“We will remove our differences and the party is fully united to regain the mandate from the people,” he said exuding confidence.
