Industry experts in the state welcomed the state government’s move, which provided a total outlay of Rs126 crore for the promotion of information technology, biotechnology and science & technology activities (IT, BT and S&T).

“The Rs126-crore allocation is a very good move. Karnataka is the only state in the country that pays high attention to the IT and BT sector. They have also made provision to promote product development in the electronic sector. I think the move is really encouraging for research and product developers in the state,” said Vinay L Deshpande, chairman, CII Karnataka, e-governance task force.

However, Deshpande said there is still room for improvement. “The state is yet to declare a policy where product developers in Karnataka get selected by the government. This will help encourage local talent and go a long way in encouraging youngsters in the state to take this up as their career,” he said.

The budget also announced an assistance of Rs10 crore to set up Solar Power Generation and Research Centre at Challikere Campus of IISc.

e-governance finally gets noticed
The e-governance sector, which was so far not on the priority list, has finally caught the government’s attention. The state has decided to set up a Karnataka Resident Hub in the coming nine months. The hub will identify each resident in a unique manner by entering the details of benefits provided to residents. The industry chambers welcomed the move and termed it as encouraging. The budget announced UID-based welfare schemes in Tumkur and Mysore districts as a pilot before rolling it out in the state. The state has enrolled 1.4 crore people for UID.

TS Sampath Kumar, secretary general, Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC), however, said the government could have done more on the taxation front.
