Karnataka botched up JNNURM job: expert

Mukesh Mathur of the National Institute of Urban Affairs, New Delhi, said that a ranking of urban centres in the implementation of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) showed that Karnataka fared rather poorly.

Speaking at the three-day seminar at Palace Grounds, Mathur said that cities across the country were ranked for their performance in the implementation of projects under JNNURM, which was first implemented in 2005, and is set to end in 2012.

Among the cities that performed well were Hyderabad and Vizag in Andhra Pradesh; Ahmadabad, Rajkot, Vododara and Surat in Gujarat; Bhopal and Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh and Pune and Nanded in Maharashtra.

Chennai and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu; Kolkata and Asansol in West Bengal and Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh also featured among the top performers.

The not-so-good performers were Ludhiana in Punjab, Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, Ajmer in Rajasthan Shillong in Meghalaya, Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh and Itanagar, capital of Arunachal Pradesh. All other cities showed laxity in implementation of JNNURM projects.
