Elected representatives of the state, including the chief minister and cabinet ministers, were in for some embarrassing moments at the 77th All-India Kannada Sahitya Sammelana which kicked off in Basavanagudi on Friday.

A blunt G Venkatasubbaiah, the president of the sammelana, lambasted the way politicians were functioning in the state even as chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, ministers R Ashoka and Govind Karajol were present on the stage, neither appreciating nor denouncing the remarks.

Venkatasubbaiah said politicians were uncultured and their aim was to cling on to power. “Currently, the political parties are fighting for power and most of them are even using vulgar language, thinking that is their weapon to get power. But they must know it is their weakness,” said Venkatasubbaiah. He said the ongoing political drama had reduced the state to a laughing stock as politicians were unveiling new episodes every day. “We have no idea when it will conclude. Let us hope for the climax soon,” said a sarcastic Venkatasubbaiah.

The critical remarks pleased the gathering who shouted slogans in support of Venkatasubbaiah. Most of the people expressed their support by standing in between the speech.

The sammelana president also blasted the state education department and its officials for not implementing Kannada as a compulsory language in schools. He asked the government to implement Kannada as the first language in all schools from class 1 to 10.

He said some officials were very much negligent about the language. Venkatasubbaiah said state government-affiliated MGES English High School located in JC Nagar was following the Andhra Pradesh syllabus. “The concerned officials of the department should give information about the actions they have taken against that school,” he said.

Venkatasubbaiah said the department should organise annual training camps to over the problem of shortage of Kannada teachers in the state.
