As the 77th Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelana began in Bangalore, chief minister BS Yeddyurappa made a tall promise — in memory of this meeting, which is happening in the capital of the state after a gap of 40 years, a statue of the deity Bhuvaneswari, primordial energy in female form, presiding deity of the universe, considered the city’s guardian, would be erected in Bangalore. And this will not be any ordinary statue, but one to match the Statue of Liberty at Liberty Island, New York.
Addressing the audience at the inaugural function of the Sammelana, Yeddyurappa said, “The statue would be as tall as the Statue of Liberty, New York, or the Statue of Lord Buddha at Lumbini Park, Hyderabad. We will keep aside `25 crore in the next budget for the purpose.” The chief minister indicated that work on the statue could begin by April 2011. While the Statue of Liberty is 46 metres tall, the Statue of Buddha in Hyderabad is 17.5 metres
tall, so it is not clear how tall the Bhuvaneshwari statue will be.
The chief minister said that a Sahitya Sammelana Bhavan would also be constructed in Bangalore at a cost of `5 crore, to mark the fact that the city has played host to the Sammelana after a gap of 40 years.
“Rs10 crore would be given to the Kannada Sahitya Parishad every year, to encourage young Kannada writers to publish their work,” Yeddyurappa said.
The chief minister also used the opportunity to impress upon the Centre the need for support and help in ‘implementing’ the classical tag that was awarded to the Kannada language. “No state in India has the unique achievement of holding such a meet for 77 years,” the chief minister said.
