The state film awards on Saturday doled out good news to the Kannada film industry. During the ceremony, chief minister BS Yeddyurappa assured that he would look into the matters pertaining to taxes that the film industry is shelling out. “A friend of mine asked me to reduce the burden of tax on every show screened. I will take steps towards this,” he said.

The government has released several crores of rupees for the benefit of the Kannada film industry and would continue to protect its interests, he told the audience.

Talking about the aspect of financial success, film personality Ravichandran said that though the state awards increased his responsibilities and added to the list of accolades he received, it did very little to ease his financial burden.

“Subsidies would help the industry greatly,” he said. However, he would continue to aspire for awards, and his forthcoming movie Manjinahani is being made with all eyes on such honours as well as commercial success.

About 40 professionals from the Kannada movie industry were honoured. B Saroja Devi was conferred the Dr Rajkumar Award for her contributions to the film industry. Film director and editor KSR Das received the Puttanna Kanagal Award.
Cinematographer RNS Krishna Prasad was given the Dr Vishnuvardhan Award. Distributor AR Raju, who has been involved in over 400 films, was also honoured.

Shehnai artiste Pandit Shailesh Bhagawan from Mumbai began the evening with a recital.  Through the evening, many groups took turns to make the event entertaining. Nagalakshmi and team performed to the song Gharane Ghara Gharane.

Yash and Meghana of Gokul troupe danced to the song Ringa Ringa. Vocalists who won awards, Nandita and Chethan, also took to the stage with Nandita singing an old number that won her a state award in the past and Chethan singing Yarenee Devatheya, the number that got him the latest award.  Little Anvita also picked up the mike to present her sonorous voice.
Information department director Muddumohan, too, took the opportunity to sing his favourite Rajkumar numbers, beginning with Nagu Nagutha Nali from  the film Bangarada Manushya.
Film-lovers trickled into the Koramangala Indoor Stadium on Saturday to catch a glimpse of the film stars and get their fill of song and dance.

The heat did not deter the crowd that walked in displaying invitations, which it later used as a hand-fan. However, the turnout wasn’t as impressive as the organisers had expected. Many seats in the gallery remained vacant through the evening.

A couple of peanut vendors were allowed into the venue. But attendees had to go without refreshments throughout the event, which went on for over four hours.
