BJP workers in the coastal area, from where Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda belongs, are jubilant after the downfall of the Reddy brothers and their friend Sriramulu.

“These guys were trying to unseat Sadananda Gowda. Their downfall will give Gowda a chance to do constructive administration in the state,” said Monappa Bhandary, former president of Dakshina Kannada unit of the party.

He described Reddy brothers as the main destabilising agents within BJP. They not only spoiled the party’s name but also posed a threat to the first BJP government in south.

The path they took was not acceptable to party workers, said Urimajalu Ram Bhat, former Puttur MLA and an RSS man. The degeneration of BJP began when the Reddy brothers were given tickets to contest assembly elections in 2008, he said.

Followers of former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa said the Reddys kept the government on tenterhooks and drew him into the vicious circle of corruption ultimately leading to his downfall.

Reddys could never influence coastal leaders, said a senior party leader who did not want to be named.

“All MLAs in the coastal district except the one in Karwar kept away from Reddys who used their money power to send countless trucks overloaded with iron ore through coastal areas to illegally export them from Mangalore and Karwar ports,” the leader said.

The heavy truck movement ravaged the coastal roads and lawmakers had to confront people on almost everyday on this count.

“Our popularity took a nosedive and we earned the wrath of people wherever we went,” he said.

A group of BJP workers said they did not have anything to do with the Reddys. “This is what happens when they don’t adhere to the Raja Dharma guidelines provided by RSS. If they did not have majority to run the government, they should have sat in the opposition benches.

What was the hurry to have the first BJP government in south?” asked Ananth Kumar Hegde, MP from Uttara Kannada.
