“I am not rich to adopt a drought-affected village. Media carry reports saying that I am worth hundreds of crores of rupees, without bothering to consult me,” former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy said on Monday.

Speaking after briefing about party’s plans for drought-relief work at a press conference at JD(S) party office, he said people did not know how much loans he owed.

Kumaraswamy announced that his party legislators (40 MLAs and MLCs) would donate one month’s salary for drought-relief work, adding that he would also divert MLC fund (`30 to `40 lakh) to carry out relief work. The party will also open gruel centres at places where the government’s relief work has not reached, he said.

When asked why he was so late in pitching into drought-relief work, he said his party was watching what the state and central governments were doing.

He said chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda’s government completely failed in delivering what it promised to people. “Gowda attends government programmes while on tour taken to monitor drought-related issues,” he said.

Kumaraswamy also announced that the party formed teams to see whether the government’s relief work reached people.

“If the government fails, our party will observe a symbolic protest for one day. If it still turns a blind eye, the party will continue the protest,” he said, adding that the protest would be held near Mahatma Gandhi statue.

Taking a dig at former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, he said: “He (Yeddyurappa) came running to Bangalore cutting short his (drought-relief) tour when Dharmendra Pradhan came down. What can you expect from him!”
