For residents of Amarjyothi Layout, water is a rare commodity indeed. Dhilip Bharatee, a businessman in Amarjyothi Layout, complains that his house gets water supply for only 15 days in a month, forcing him to rely on bottled water and other sources.

“The borewell has dried up and the level of water is barely at 1000 feet now. And there’s no other form of water harvesting such as rainwater harvesting that’s been conducted in our layout,” he said.

Another resident, Anjali Bhandary, has problems with the sewage and drainage systems. “I have lived here for five years and I’ve only heard of promises, but no progress,” she said. She is distressed because the sewage and drainage outlets not only raise a stink literally, but also has led to the area to become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Water stagnation near her house means her family has to stay in an unhygienic environment.

However, the BWSSB believes it has made progress in the area’s civic development. Assistant executive engineer (AEE) Rahul Priyadarshi, said that the situation is under control. A 9-inch sewage line being built that caters to Koramangala and Chellagatta Valley, he said.

The proposal is at the final stage of clearance and the project would be completed by the monsoon season, he added. Another project worth ¤55 crore is in the ‘pipeline’ to replace old sewage lines.
