Three jail wardens were allegedly assaulted on Friday by six jail inmates of the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison for repeatedly objecting to their using mobile phones and complaining to senior officers over the same.

Jail officials confirmed the incident. A senior officer said wardens Venkatesh, Nanjappa and Hiremath were injured in the incident, which happened at 12.30 pm. They were rushed to the jail hospital.

The incident happened after jail officials received information that some inmates were using cellphones in the fourth room of the third block of the jail. Venkatesh, Nanjappa, Hiremath and others rushed to the spot, and found two phones in the possession of undertrial prisoners Rahil and others. They were arrested for robbery and dacoity cases.

The staff took the prisoners to senior jail officials, following which an altercation broke out. One of the prisoners turned violent and started throwing utensils at the wardens. Venkatesh and Nanjappa were hit on their heads by plates, while a steel jug hit Hiremath on the face. Senior jail officials soon brought the situation under control and seized the mobilephones.

Chief superintendent of Central Prison Lakshminarayana said the Parappana Agrahara police had been informed about the incident.
“We will discuss the matter with the additional director-general of police (prison) Gagandeep and other senior officers, and decide whether to file a police complaint at all.”
