It is festival time and it means an excuse to pamper the taste buds with some delicacies. As a result, that favourite dress does not fit by the time its Christmas. DNA spoke to nutritionists and fitness consultants to find out ways to avoid those extra calories, while pampering the sweet tooth.

Enjoy good food but watch the quantity, says Nikita Suresh, diet and fitness counsellor. “Take a small quantity of delicacies  so that you don’t feel deprived,’’ she said.

“It is advisable to take a serving of soup, salad or sprouts from home before partying. The logic is, since you won’t feel hungry, you will end up eating less,” said Jyothi Prasad, chief dietician, Manipal Hospital.

Irrespective of what gets into your regular diet, ensure that, you eat a fresh fruit or vegetable every day, during this season. Regular exercise is the best way to shed those extra calories.

Fitness experts say that at least 30 to 45 minutes of brisk walk is a must. “But in case you are bored of a particular form of exercise, at least spare time for some form of physical activity like dancing or gardening,” said Nikita.

Jyothi suggests not to indulge in sugar-free sweets. They might be low in sugar but contain fat.
