Using sports to promote a scientific temper: who could lead a mission of that nature better than students and faculty of the century-old Indian Institute of Technology (IISc), Bangalore? The IISc is all set to get into jogging shoes for the ‘Science and Technology Run, 2011’ on March 6.

The event will be organised by the students’ council and the alumni association of the IISc. A member of the organising committee said, “The event is aimed at creating scientific temperament among the youth. We also want to highlight the fact that Bangalore is now the country’s hub for scientific and technological activity. Besides, IISc has been an integral part of the cultural life of Bangalore. The progress of the institute has been closely observed and monitored by Bangaloreans in the 102 years of its existence. This run is symbolic, to strengthen support for science and bring the institute closer to the people of the city.”

The organisers expect nearly 2,000 people to take part in the run from across the city. Besides students and teachers of the IISc, those working in the information technology and biotechnology industries are also expected to jog on March 6 for the cause of promoting the scientific temperament. Students from science and engineering colleges have evinced interest, as have many who have a passion for science, even if not a professional engagement with it.

Runners will be divided into different categories. The science and technology (SnT) joggers will cover a distance of 10 km, and this category is open to all. The FunRun competition will cover 5 km, and is also open to all. A corporate relay run of 10 km will see five-member teams competing with each other, as each member of each team covers a distance of 2 km. A walkathon of 2 km distance is open only to participants above 55 years of age. There is also a 2-km run, a competition for children, open only to those below 15 years of age.
