Road transport authorities have tightened security in  buses and depots following the serial blasts in Mumbai. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has deputed security and vigilance officers at all the bus stations, especially at the Kempegowda Bus Station (KBS) in the city.

“We have installed metal detectors at bus stations and started checking the luggage of passengers. We have directed our vigilance officers to check  unauthorised objects,” said BM Ramachandraiah, chief vigilance officer of the KSRTC.

“We are in constant touch with the Maharashtra state transport authorities and if they issue any warning, our Mumbai-bound buses will take alternative routes,” said Raj Kumar, director (operations) of the KSRTC.

Of the 10 daily schedules to Mumbai from Karnataka, five are from Bangalore. The KSRTC also runs 25 schedules to Chennai from Bangalore.

Meanwhile, the director-general of police, Neelam Achutha Rao, discussed safety measures with officials of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) on Thursday evening.

“CCTV cameras will be installed in all major bus stations and passengers will be frisked at the KBS entrance. The DGP agreed that frisking will be difficult on the platforms where people change buses within a short while,” said MP Prabhu Das, chief traffic manager (operations), BMTC.

Since frisking of all passengers is near-impossible, security personnel will be deployed in shifts. He also said that if commuters found any unattended object in the bus or bus stand for long hours, they should immediately call the police control room.

The South-Western Railways has already beefed up security at all the railway stations in Bangalore and frisking of luggage and passengers started from Wednesday night itself.

City police and armed reserve personnel have also been deployed in good numbers to take care of any untoward situation. The Railway Police Force has been asked to continuously patrol the coaches.
