Helmetless riders in Bangalore cough up fat fines

Motorists of Bangalore city have paid the highest amount as penalty for violating rules related to wearing helmet.
Since 2006 when the state government made helmet wearing mandatory in metropolitan cities of the state, the highest amount of penalty collected for violating the rule is from Bangalore city. About 10,48,631 cases were registered and Rs10,48,63,100 have been collected from motorists.

This was followed by Mysore city motorists with 3,19,594 cases registered and Rs3,19,59,400 collected as penalty. In 2006, following the Karnataka high court directive, the state government has made it compulsory to wear helmets while riding two wheelers in metropolitan cities. This rule has been implemented under section 230 of the Motor Vehicles act.

The rule applies to Bangalore, Mysore, Belgaum, Mangalore, Hubli-Dharwad and Gulbarga cities. Till today, no case relating to its violation has been registered in Mangalore city although `29,79,000 penalty has been collected from motorists.
These details were provided by the state transport department to the question from MLC Basava Raj Horatti in the legislative council on Monday.
