A city school teacher and her husband are allegedly absconding after cheating their neighbours at RS Palya in Banasawadi to the tune of lakhs of rupees.
Police registered a complaint against the headmistress of Royal Public School in HRBR Layout, Vijaya Kumari, 40, and her husband T Palani, who had been employed with a private company in Kammanahalli.
The case was registered on a complaint by Latha R, a neighbour of the missing couple, who has been running a chit fund in the locality. While she had lost Rs8 lakh to the teacher, her brother lost Rs5.85 lakh.
Latha had saved the money to buy a car for her husband, whose health did not allow him to ride a two-wheeler. Vijaya was aware of the woman’s savings.
Besides the siblings, the teacher had allegedly borrowed money from at least seven others, including a police constable’s wife, citing different reasons and providing fake property documents as sureties. It has been suspected that she took a total of `30 lakh from them. Police suspected that more people could have fallen victim to the teacher’s guiles.
Latha said Vijaya had won the confidence of the neighbours during the couple’s five-year stay in the locality. She allegedly borrowed money from Latha on the pretext of providing medical treatment to her friend’s husband.
“I couldn’t even lie since she already knew I have the money. Since I trusted her, I gave her the money,” Latha said.
Vijaya had provided Latha the documents of her colleague’s property as surety, which she took back on November 10, saying a money lender had promised her double the amount. She vouched to return Latha’s money by 4 pm that evening. That was the last time Latha had seen her.
The couple, Latha said, left their rented accommodation, taking with them only a computer and clothes. The Banasawadi police said the couple had been residents of Shanthamma Building in RS Palya. Investigators were yet to get any lead in the case.
