Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), in association with the ministry of new and renewable energy and Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited, will organise a two-day convention on green power.
While the state of energy sector in the country is grim and no amount of attention seems to ease the sector, a lot of efforts are being put to use energy efficiently and turn to green power.
The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), in association with the ministry of new and renewable energy and Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited, will organise a two-day convention on green power and its generation in the city beginning Tuesday.
CII chairman of Karnataka state council S Chandrashekhar, who is also the managing director of Bhoruka Power Corporation, spoke about the critical problems that the energy sector is facing and how they could be solved.
“The main problem with the energy sector is the difference between demand and supply. And behind this is the infrastructure problem of the generation companies,” Chandrashekhar said.
He explained that land acquisition for setting up good power projects was a major issue in India, especially Karnataka.
Drawing examples from the Raichur, Udupi or Bellary thermal plants which function with half the capacity throughout the year because of low maintenance, he said the next big problem with any generation project was maintenance.
“The industries are always blamed for consuming more power but it is only 10% that HT industries consume while LT and HT industries together consume about 16% of power in Karnataka,” Chandrasekhar said. He pointed out that the generation companies, supply companies and consumers of power should address the demand-supply imbalance and then use power efficiently.
“While generation of power from conventional resources is being outsourced and green power still remains costly, states should start forming a singular authority to understand the critical problems and take measures to form an integrated energy policy, knowing what are the resources available and how they can be used efficiently for the generation and supply issues,” Chandrahskhar proposed as solutions which can be immediately taken up.
